The mirror
Why AI mirrors humans, and how to get better outputs and workflows from it
AI reflects human behaviour back, the calm and the overwhelmed alike, without differentiating the two. That is why its output swings from sharp to confidently wrong, and what to do about it.
This is behavioural science aimed at the technology, better AI outputs. The same science drives the human side too: getting people to actually adopt AI.
The mirror
AI reflects people. It does not sort them.
It is built from us
What it knows, it learned from us. The data inside it is built from what people have written and done, at a vast scale. That human record is all it has to draw on.
The record is mixed
Those examples hold every state, calm and overwhelmed, side by side, with nothing to mark which is which. People had already filled their own gaps, too.
It fills gaps of its own
Its energy and processing are finite, so it optimises, adding its own shortcuts and assumptions to fill whatever is missing. People do the same under load.
It does not differentiate
So it reflects both states back, equally confident, which is why the same tool can be sharp one moment and confidently wrong the next.
The same bridge, mirrored
One bridge, both sides. What holds a person up holds the output up. Steer what we hand it, and the reflection follows.
The bridge
Behaviour turns an intention into a result, if it can carry the load.
The load · CUE
How the behaviour shows up
- Checks its own work
- Asks for what is missing
- Flags what it is unsure of
Calm, the same four moves settle it and the output holds.
For a model: resources, context, clear framing and examples, the same four moves, aimed at the machine.
Better outputs, and better workflows
Steer it toward the calm pattern: give it context, ask it to check itself, invite doubt, slow the pace. The reflection follows, and that is what better outputs are.
AI reflects what it is given. The skill is choosing which version of people to put in front of it.
